5 Tips to Preserve Your Curly Hair

Do you have curly hair? You aren't alone. Statistics show that roughly half of all women have wavy or curly hair. Regardless of the length, though, curls don't last forever. Your hair will likely lose some of its curls over time, which can lead to a frizzy and unkempt appearance. The good news is that you can make your curly hair last longer by following these five tips.

#1) Pre-Treat Before Washing

Before washing your hair, consider using a pre-treatment solution. There are pre-treatment solutions available that are designed specifically for curly hair. They typically consist of a nourishing oil that, when applied to your hair, will infuse it with natural oils. Pre-treating your hair will help to preserve your natural curls so that they don't lose their natural shape.

#2) Invest in a Silk Pillowcase

It may sound unusual, but sleeping on a silk pillowcase can preserve your curly hair. Cotton pillowcases are more absorbent. When sleeping on a cotton pillowcase, sebum from your hair and scalp will soak into the cotton material. A silk pillowcase will repel sebum. As a result, it will allow your hair to breathe while simultaneously preserving your natural curls.

#3) Don't Overdry It

You should use caution when drying your hair. If you overdry it, you may lose some of your natural curls. Drying, of course, will result in the loss of moisture. Your hair will lose some of its moisture content if you dry it. If it loses too much moisture, it may turn from curly to frizzy. You can still dry your hair; just remember not to overdo it.

#4) Use Conditioner

Don't underestimate the importance of using conditioner when washing your hair. Shampoo alone isn't always sufficient. While shampoo will clean your hair, it won't necessarily moisturize your hair. That's where conditioner comes into play. Conditioners are designed to moisturize and hydrate hair, which is essential to preserving curls. You can even use a leave-in conditioner that, as the name suggests, doesn't require rinsing or washing out.

#5) Detangle With a Brush

Detangling your hair with a brush will help to preserve your natural curls. Tangles are more common with curly hair than straight hair. If you don't detangle your hair, you'll inevitably lose some of your natural curls. You can preserve your curly hair, though, by brushing it daily. Brushing will remove tangles so that your hair retains its natural curls.
